The United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently issued a statement announcing the list of winners for its mission patch design competition. Out of the five winners, one of them hails from Miri, Sarawak!

12-year-old Teng Wei Rui’s design was selected out of 10,000 applicants from around the world for Tynker’s Forward to the Moon Mission Patch Design Challenge.

An excerpt from NASA’s statement announcing the winners reads,

“Since 1965, every mission to space has had its own mission patch design created by the astronauts who made the trip. Before heading off to space, the crew works together to design a patch to represent themselves and the mission. Tynker recently conducted the Forward to the Moon Mission Patch Design Coding Challenge for students across the globe.”

“In this competition, students designed and animated a Forward to the Moon mission patch. The competition was inspired by NASA’s plans to send the first woman and next man to the lunar surface by 2024.”

According to the New Sarawak Tribune, Teng Wei Rui, who is a Form 1 student, learns computer programming at the Real Fun Learning Centre in Miri. Teng’s trainer told the daily,

“I am so happy for Teng, I have always wanted to empower people like him to be makers. Our centre gives them the platform and tools to help them achieve their ambitions and make an impact.”

“I wrote ‘Go Further to Our Future because this mission represents our future to live on the moon and Mars.”

Mike Kincaid, NASA’s associate administrator for the Office of STEM Engagement, was also quoted in the statement announcing the winners as saying,

“NASA is going to the Moon in 2024, and then on to Mars in a sustainable way. To achieve our mission, we need the next generation of STEM students to join us. This collaboration with Tynker will inspire students in STEM to be a large part of our future to the Moon and Mars.”

A huge congratulations to Teng on this outstanding achievement! Malaysia boleh!
