Attaining a scholarship to further one’s studies can be quite a tedious process as there are many processes and approvals an individual has to go through. However, after all the effort and wishful thinking, it’s not even guaranteed if an individual will succeed in getting the scholarship he or she desires.

With that being said, it looks like there is hope for Palestinian students living in Malaysia as Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has just revealed that scholarships will be given out to our Middle-Eastern friends by 12 local universities, reported The Star. These scholarships will be offered to selected Palestinian students already living here.

This move is possible as these universities were able to raise RM11.47 million to sponsor Palestinians to study in Malaysia.

“The government has decided to offer scholarships through the Palestinian Cultural Organisation Malaysia (PCOM) for Palestinian students to pursue bachelor, masters, and PhD courses in 12 established Malaysian universities,” Dr Mahathir said.

In his speech at the 9th Grand Iftar with the Palestinian community yesterday (22 May), Dr Mahathir affirmed once more how committed Malaysia is to supporting the Palestinians, and added that the struggles they have been going through for decades is not something that should be taken lightly.

“It is a story about a once-free people who have lost their land forcibly through a brutal occupation committed blatantly for the whole world to see,” he said, adding that “standing up for Palestinians was a moral obligation”.

“Malaysia will continue to condemn Israel for its aggression and cruelties on Palestinians. We will not keep quiet for as long as we see the atrocities and injustices committed by the Israeli regime.”

Alongside Dr Mahathir at the event was his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Khalid Meshaal, former chairman of Hamas (the Islamic Resistance Movement of Palestine).
