Rape is a serious problem in society, and it is simply sad to see that such cases are still making headlines despite the offenders knowing the consequences of such acts.
It is even worse when the offenders are those who are thought to be responsible in protecting the victims in the first place.
In a recent case, a Standard 5 pupil shockingly never realised her grandfather’s vice on her was wrong. She only knew when she was told so following a sex education class at her school in Kota Kinabalu!
Reported by The Star, the 11-year-old has been raped by her own grandfather for over a year. She never told anyone about it because she did not know that it was wrong.
Having confided the incident with her teacher, a police report was lodged which led to the subsequent arrest of her 50-year-old farmer grandfather.
On Thursday justice was served as the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu sentenced him to 27 years in prison.
Sabah Women’s Action Resoures Group (SAWO) President Winnie Yee said that the incident proved how important sexual education was to be implemented in all schools.
“We are now working towards having the state Education Department expand sex education to all schools in Sabah.”
“Every school needs to have someone who can handle and talk about these issues.”
Noting that there is a rise in adolescent sex in Malaysia, Winnie quoted a report published by UNICEF stating that “some young people (in Malaysia) experiment with drugs and engage in unprotected sex.”
“This increases their risk of unwanted pregnancies as well as contracting HIV, hepatitis and other sexually transmitted diseases.”
Let’s protect our children and prevent incidences like this from recurring in the future. As for the grandpa, good riddance!
