Almost everyone knows or have heard about Premenstrual Syndrome or more commonly known as PMS, which affects a woman’s emotions, physical health, and behavior. The syndrome affects 20% to 40% of women.
But, did you know that there is a male equivalent? Recently, a TikTok video by Everlife Pharmacy shed some light on a syndrome called Irritable Male Syndrome or IMS which is quite common in men.
What is IMS?
According to National Library of Medicine, IMS is a behavioural state of nervousness, irritability, lethargy and depression that occurs in adult male mammals following withdrawal of testosterone.
The common causes of IMS include:
- Decrease in amount of testosterone,
- Changes in brain chemistry, often associated with a diet too high in protein and too low in healthy carbohydrates,
- Chronic stress causing men to become more irritable and angry,
- Living in a world out of balance with climate change, economic dislocations, loss of biodiversity, and other hazards cause us all to feel more anxious and frightened,
- The changing of male roles.
Although there is no exact number, it is reported that up to 30% of men experience it and that it is much more prevalent in older men as your testosterone levels naturally decreases as you age.
What can you do about it?
If you think that you’re affected by IMS, there are a couple ways of managing and dealing with it.
The first step would be to go for a testosterone level check up to see where your levels are at. If your IMS is caused by a decrease in testosterone levels, one of the main treatment options is testosterone replacement therapy.
These are regular injections of a synthetic version of the hormone which can often help restore vitality and other characteristics affected by declining hormone levels.
It is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to ensure that your testosterone levels do not drop too much.
This includes eating a healthy diet and avoiding foods that are high in fat and added sugars as well as limiting alcohol consumption and exercising.
Additionally, mental health treatment is also important as therapy may be a good method to help you with unwanted changes in your personality by learning how to communicate it properly.
