In the recent September keynote by Apple, the remarkable iPhone X took the world by storm with its sophisticated Face ID technology and really, really expensive price tag at an estimated RM4,200.
In terms of security, the Face ID is said to be much safer than the previous Touch ID.
In fact, Apple says that the chance of fooling Face ID is literally one in a million, which is a safer ratio compared to that of one in 50,000 that a random person could use their fingerprint to unlock an older iPhone, CNET reported.
Here’s how the Face ID works.
- The phone lights up your face
- It projects 30,000 infrared dots to create a rough pattern of your face
- It takes pictures of these dots with the infrared camera
- It decides whether the picture looks like you to determine if you’re the owner.
However, instead of feeling safer than ever, some netizens are worried that their wives might curi curi unlock their iPhone X while they’re sleeping. You’re hiding something izit? 😛
Luckily, China is one step ahead of this problem and have come up with a solution. Apparently, anti-Face ID masks are now being sold online in China to ensure iPhone X owners feel safer while sleeping.
These masks are available in different patterns. Some cover the entire face for maximum security, while others look more breathable as they come with cut-outs at the eyes and/or mouth. Why not just get a ski mask instead?
The product description for the masks reads something like this.
“This sleeping face mask can prevent Face ID from unlocking your phone. It’s a necessity if you’re using iPhone X so that you can sleep soundly.”
The price for these anti-Face ID masks range from 46 yuan (approx. RM30) to 99 yuan (approx. RM63), and just in case you’re wondering, yes, there are people who have bought it!
Not a fan of these plain black masks? Here are other alternatives you can consider:
I guess the bigger question here is, does it work? Well, nobody knows for sure because the pre-order for the iPhone X only starts on October 27th, according to Apple.
Some Apple fans said that the Face ID can actually determine whether someone is sleeping when unlocking the phone, therefore the mask is actually pointless. Others jokingly said that the iPhone X is not ideal for people who have twins. Imagine if you have an identical twin!
China is excellent in riding on hypes. Remember that one time when Kim Jung Nam was assassinated in Malaysia and the they started selling the ‘LOL’ shirt worn by the female agent?
