Our local brands are known for their creative advertising efforts from the likes of baju melayu brand Bulan Bintang’s Mat Kilau inspired advert to Saji’s Ramadan advert.
Recently, local coffee chain ZUS Coffee released a video on their social media which was all about them being on trial to prove how local they really are.
The video features well-known content creators and comedian Kavin Jay, Arieff Yong, Ryan Howlett. It starts off with Arieff who is the judge, making his entrance into the courtroom and stating that the trial being heard is the case of whether ZUS Coffee is international or local.
Kavin is the lawyer representing the local side whilst Ryan represents the international side. Ryan starts off the debate by questioning how ZUS Coffee is even local as neither the name nor the logo has any local elements.
This then leads to Kavin stating that although he agrees, he justifies the reasoning behind it as due to the fact that Malaysian brands often try to use more internationally friendly names to stand out. “A name is just a name,” said Kavin.
He then went on to explain to say that we shouldn’t take names seriously and shows it by using Pulau Kentut and Gunung Besar Hantu as examples of places in Malaysia with terrible names.
Following this, Ryan then goes on to criticise the local quality served by local brands.
“We local people do have a local quality, but who says that local quality is bad quality,” argued Kavin.
Kavin then goes on to explain that no matter how many times Malaysians are knocked down, we will rise back up no matter what and proudly declare to the world that is what makes us Malaysian-made.
After Arieff declares that ZUS Coffee is proudly Malaysian, the spectators burst into cheers and the video ends with Ryan tasting a cup of coffee from ZUS Coffee only to be surprised by how good it is.
The advert has since drawn praise from netizens who expressed joy at the creativity behind it.
