Chicken rice is probably one of the easiest, heartiest meals that you can conveniently grab in most of South East Asia.
A woman who goes by the name of Chef Bon on TikTok, has compared Hainanese chicken rice from Bangkok, Thailand and Singapore and shared the clip online.
@munchiesbybon Incredible chicken at #tiantian but was it enough?? #hainanesechickenrice #khaomangai #singapore #bangkok #goang
In the less-than-2-minute clip that has garnered over 70,000 views, Chef Bon says that she is a “self-proclaimed expert” on chicken rice as she eats a lot of it and asks people to overlook her bias as a Thai person.
To start off the comparison, she went to Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice in Singapore to get a plate. The chicken rice that came had a generous helping of chicken, sauce and some cucumbers, it came up to 4.50 SGD (RM15).
However, she was bummed out that there was no soup.
“The chicken was juicy, they didn’t skimp on the skin. The rice was nothing crazy, the sauce was average but the lack of soup was the worst part.”
Chef Bon gave the chicken a 5/5, 3/5 for rice, 0/5 for soup, 3/5 for the accoutrements and 4/5 for the price which is equal to 60%.
In Bangkok, she went to Go-Ang in Pratunam where her meal consists of chicken, rice, soup, chicken blood, sauces and cucumber. This meal costs 50 Thai Baht (RM6.60).
“The chicken blood was so tender and for a simple dish like Hainanese chicken rice, every little thing counts.”
Taking the same categories into account, she gave Go-Ang a 4/5 for chicken, 4/5 for rice, 3/5 for soup, 5/5 for accoutrement and 5/5 for the price which brings it to a whopping 84%.
A netizen felt that her spotlight on the soup was unneeded.
However, we are of the opinion that food is always a very subjective thing and what matters to one person may not matter to another!
