Recently, a video of a hawker in China stir-frying stones with seasoning went viral and was shared on multiple social media platforms. Uploaded by creator Zhutouxinyi on Xiaohongshu, the video was titled: “Can you believe it… I ate fried stones in the night market.”

The dish is called stir fry cobbles, or SuoDiu, the short form of “sucking and then throwing away”.  It’s a unique dish from Hubei, where cobbles are fried with garlic, spring onion, ginger, chilli, and chilli oil.

The hawker said in the video that you may eat the stir-fry stones by sucking them and enjoying their fragrance.  When asked by the creator if he needed to return the stones after he finished eating, the hawker replied, “No need, you can bring them home as a souvenir”.

Although this dish has been questioned by many, some think it suits those who are on a diet but crave flavours since you’re technically just consuming the seasoning without anything. Apparently, in China, there’s another dish where they cook eggs and cobbles.

So, what do you think? Would you give this unique stir-fry stones dish a try?
