Yesterday (22nd October), the wife of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, spoke at a seminar on cyber crime at the Royale Chulan Hotel  in Kuala Lumpur, where she came forward to share her experience with cyberbullying and being the target of fake news.

I’m not so internet savvy, but I know that a lot of people abuse the use of the internet. I don’t have Facebook, so if you see a Facebook page with my name on the internet, it is not mine,” the Prime Minister’s wife stated, according to Free Malaysia Today.

She went on to say that she doesn’t know who would have the time to create a fake Facebook account pretending to be her. Datin Seri Rosmah also pointed out that according to research, the most prominent forms of cyber threats towards women and children are cyberbullying, social media influence and cyber crime.

At the seminar, she also highlighted the alarming trend of internet addiction among Malaysians, saying,

“Internet addiction occurs when a person spends more than four hours online that has nothing to do with work and learning. Based on this definition, many Malaysians tend to be addicted to the Internet.”

According to the New Straits Times, she also pointed out that this problem is escalating among the younger generation of Malaysians.

“Nearly 45 per cent of children between seven and nine know how to use the Internet while 92.5 per cent of teens between 13 to 17 years old uses the Internet.”

“This is an inter-generational problem which will repeat itself and can later lead to the risk of children becoming victims or predators of cyber crimes.”

She concluded her speech by encouraging the relevant authorities to work together in an effort to curb this growing problem.

“We are responsible to inculcate Internet literacy among children and teens so they can grow to be educated, ethical and responsible adults.”
