Our vision is one of the most important things in our life so taking good care of our eyes are only natural. Facing the computer and phone screen almost every minute of our waking moment doesn’t help as this is commonly known to be bad for our eyes. We tend to blink less when doing so and this makes our eyes dry and uncomfortable.

According to Oriental Daily, to counteract this problem, this 27-year-old man from Hong Kong had purchased some eye drops while on holiday in Japan. He regularly used the eye drops for about half a year and he would apply some when his eyes felt uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, he developed cataracts soon after that and doctors suspected that it could have been caused by his eye drops as it contains steroids. Liu Kai Shan, an eye specialist explained that he had felt perfectly comfortable after using the eye drops but over time, it caused him to develop cataracts.

As cataracts are usually prevalent among the elderly, Liu said that this is especially worrying as the patient was still young. She also said that using these eye drops may soothe the eye temporarily but warned that using over-the-counter eye drops for a long period can have detrimental consequences. Now we’re scared!

In addition, she advised that if symptoms persist, one should always go to a professional doctor to determine the cause of the discomfort and not simply use eye drops as there may be ingredients in them that may not be suitable. The expiry date on eye drops are also obviously not there just as display because using expired eye drops may cause an infection due to bacterial growth.

Remember, always go to the doctor to check out any medical problems!
