“Panic buying”. It has been almost 3 years since we last heard these words, and they certainly take us on a trip down memory lane to the very first round of MCO, when we had to get all essential items in one trip due to the curfew.
MCO is merely a history now and despite its absence, a number of Penangites were spotted panic-buying boxes of mineral water. According to a TikTok video shared by Finaz Effendy, the shelf that was filled with bottles of mineral water was quickly emptied when a huge crowd raced to get themselves the supply of water they needed.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Finaz said that the panic buying was caused by an unscheduled water shortage in the state which had affected many residents since a few days back. Finaz said that the incident happened at Aeon Southwest Penang during Mother’s Day.
As for Finaz herself, she was not affected by the water cut.
“My house is not affected. The water cut affects those on the Southwest.”
She also said that she was visiting the mall to get her groceries and was surprised to see the crowd racing for the bottles of mineral water.
Finaz also told WORLD OF BUZZ that the water supply has yet to resume, but some residents are having access to it gradually.
“Parts of Kedah were also affected by the water cut,” Finaz added.
According to a report by Astro Awani, parts of Penang and Kedah have started to face unscheduled water disruptions since Sunday (14 May). In a statement released by the Chief Minister of Penang, the water supply services in Penang have recovered to about 90% as of May 15.

With the scorching weather expected to last until August, we can only imagine the trouble that Penangites have to go through during the water cut. Dear Penangites, have the water supply recovered in your area?
