A circulating social media post claims that a Universiti Malaya (UM) senior lecturer is not only a member of the Freemasons but was also spotted consuming alcohol.
The viral post alleges that the lecturer and his wife are linked to a Freemason branch overseas. Furthermore, the post portrays the organisation as being “un-Islamic” and questions the university’s decision to appoint the lecturer.

The claims also suggest that the academic actively participates in meetings allegedly taking place in Bukit Jalil.
For those unaware, Freemasonry is an international fraternal brotherhood that originated in Europe several centuries ago, evolving from medieval stonemasons’ guilds between the 1500s and 1700s.
The organisation focuses on promoting moral principles, charitable work, community service, and personal development among its members. Although it is not affiliated with any specific religion, members are required to believe in a Supreme Being.
UM initiates investigation
In an official statement released this morning (12 February), the university management responded to the matter, stating they are well aware of the situation and are currently conducting an investigation. UM clarified that the inquiry will be handled fairly, transparently, and in accordance with both the law and the university’s internal rules and procedures.
“The public is advised to allow the investigation process to proceed without interference and to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information, in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and the privacy of all parties involved.”
UM further emphasised its commitment to ensuring that the matter is handled professionally, ethically, and responsibly, in line with the principles of good governance.
