The traditional saree is not only a favourite among Indian women but is a clothing item that is well-liked by all Malaysians. Often used as a tool to bridge cultural gaps, traditional clothing has long been considered a viable vessel despite a recent claim by an individual stating that wearing such clothes for personal gain by a prominent celebrity is cultural appropriation.

Showing just how much the said individual’s claim is out of line, many have risen to the occasion stating that the sentiment is not shared among Malaysians.

Taking to Twitter, netizen @kynajusha shared her experience witnessing a concerned aunty helping another girl out with her saree.

Completely oblivious to the narrative that is taking place among Malaysians, she writes, “Why is everyone talking about wearing each other’s clothes? What did I miss?”

“I wore a saree yesterday, and every time I meet up with a fellow Malaysian, they would always say I look nice. This aunty even helped me out with my ensemble.”

Well, isn’t that nice?

She added that she recorded everything on video which she shared on her Instagram, adding that Malaysians should not be divided over one small issue and we are all indeed better than this.

Let’s applaud our fellow Malaysians for setting the example that it is our similarities and not our differences that makes us who we are.

What better way to strengthen our resolve as Malaysians this Merdeka month right? 😀
