Former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is among the 5 candidates listed by UMNO Pekan to defend the Parliamentary seat in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).

Based on a report by Sinar Harian, UMNO Pekan deputy head, Datuk Seri Zamri Ramly shared that the decision was made after taking into account that the former leader still has the opportunity to contest if he succeeds in his application to review the Federal Court’s decision last August.

He said that, if the court’s decision ends up in his favour and he is to be freed before the nomination of candidates, Najib is then still eligible to contest to defend the Parliamentary seat.

“So there is no problem for UMNO Pekan to list his (Najib’s) name in the list of candidates for GE15,” he shared.

He also explained that UMNO Pekan does not intend to put Najib’s children, Datuk Nizar Najib and Nooryana Najwa in the Parliamentary seats as Nizar is encouraged to run for the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seat.

“Nooryana is not active in politics so it may not be time for her name to be nominated,” he added.

Apart from Najib, the other 4 candidates listed were not disclosed.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence after the Federal Court upheld his conviction in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case on August 23.
