Everybody knows the benefits that come with eating your vegetables and fruits. Although certain types of vegetables may cause harm, there is an endless list of benefits for you to eat your greens… RAW! Yes you read that right!
It was recently reported that a post-doctoral researcher from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) Centre for Healthy Ageing and Wellness found that ‘Ulam Raja’ which is know for its medicinal, antibacterial and antifungal properties, can also help to prevent memory loss.
A Facebook post by UKM recently highlighted Dr You Yee Xing’s discovery at the recent 49th UKM Convocation Ceremony where he was awarded the Doctoral Gold Award.
The post reads, “Elderly people often have memory problems and it deteriorates as they age. Dr You has found a solution to this problem.”
“He has successfully created a Ulam Raja supplement that is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants to prevent senile dementia in the elderly. This supplement has the potential to act as a cognitive disorder prevention agent by lowering lipid peroxide levels, increasing serum glutathione levels and activating the brain.”
The results of Dr You’s study found that this supplement improves global cognitive function, working memory, reduces stress and emotional disturbances among the elderly.
“This study also has a positive impact on the health of society and the economy of the country leading to the development of agro-based industries and agriculture related to ulam raja.“
The post by UKM also mentioned that Dr You is regarded as someone with a cheerful personality and is able to speak Malay fluently.
“A graduate in the field of dietetics, Dr You have successfully published 23 papers in well-known publications including journal articles related to the field of study.”
Ulam Raja literally means ‘King’s salad’
Ulam Raja is a common leaf which is commonly consumed in Malay cuisine. Literally translated to mean ‘King’s salad’, the leafs are often added to dishes and consumed with rice.
Apart from using it in salads, it is also commonly consumed with tempoyak (condiment made from fermented durian) and cincalok (condiment made from fermented small shrimps or krill).
Aside from its benefits in preventing memory loss, it is alleged that by consuming this plant, one is able to enhance his or her blood circulation as well as protect their bones.
Who would have thought that vegetables are also able to help prevent memory loss. Here’s another reason to load up on your greens.
