This is amazing!

Two Malaysian scientists, Andrew Ng Kay Lup and Lai Yee Qing, won a prestigious award in Germany at the Green Talents Competition 2019, wrote Malay Mail. Their work in sustainable development was so impressive that they were amongst the only 25 award recipients in the competition organised by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The competition was held to raise awareness on the “exchange of innovative green ideas”.

Andrew, who is a Universiti Malaya PhD holder, and Lai presented their exciting project to a bunch of international researchers whose sole focus is to improve sustainability in industries. Andrew showcased his astounding research on organic-based perovskites, which is an alternative sustainable battery for automobiles that has greater horsepower with reduced weight and charging times.

Meanwhile, Lai wow-ed the judges with her work on “improving industrial thermal energy efficiency through the innovation of existing heat exchanger networks”. Both of their findings can directly help manufacturers reduce greenhouse gasses discharge and save money.  Speaking to Malay Mail, Andrew was ecstatic over his win and urged Malaysians to use renewable energy for a “sustainable future”. Andrew said,

“Malaysia is a land that is constantly filled with sunlight, yet it is underutilised. I hope Malaysia will be a nation that has this awareness not just by talk and no walk, but to be committed to reaching out for new sustainable technologies and enforcing environmental policies. We should also be fully investing in the raising of more future experts in addressing these issues.”

Lai, who is currently doing her PhD in chemical engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, told Malay Mail that she was thankful for the opportunity to network as she won the competition. She shared,

“Forums like this provide opportunities for researchers with the same goal from all over the world to meet, interact, and connect with each other.”

FYI, the competition had over 800 applicants from 97 countries and the two scientists managed to rise to the top amongst all the other talented researchers from all around the world. Wow!

Well, we congratulate Andrew and Lai for their amazing achievement; we hope that they will reach greater heights in the future and make us proud.
