After being diagnosed with vocal cord cancer, design architect Chun Hooi Tan decided to embrace his introverted side through the creation of his home, the Introverse House.
This gorgeous semi-detached single-storey property has since been nominated for Archdaily’s Building of the Year 2023.
Chun Hooi Tan, who is the Founder of Core Design Workshop, was inspired to design the Introverse House after reading about an extreme introvert (a Malaysian Hikikomori – someone severe social withdrawal) who found comfort in the Covid-19 lockdowns.
Following his diagnosis, he, alongside his wife who is a contemporary art gallerist cum avid collector of Malaysian contemporary arts, initiated the Introverse House project in 2020.
2 years of inception, conceptualisation, design and long haul construction later, the Introverse House was born.
“Introverse defies the social norms and puts a new living to its test, a living in where a home is organised in the introversion manner, contrary to the normal outward-looking houses.”
“The architecture of Introverse take precedence in redefining the garden to a house. It started with a fill-height linear garden wall, suspended on a steel structure, hovering above ground running along 10 feet from the perimeter fencing, creating a new walled garden within a garden,” Chun shared on the Core Design Workshop website.
“Separated from the outer garden, the inner garden, mirroring the ancient Chinese architecture of the Japanese’s Zen Garden, sees a new purpose.”
“It is an outdoor space where one can live without the constraints of security and privacy, a garden where one can utilise and enjoy at the same time. It is within this walled garden area where the wet rooms of the house, the kitchen and the bathrooms are found, integrated freely with no physical walls defining the individual areas,” he added.
This house designed by Core Design Workshop and built by Sinar Sintetik Sdn. Bhd. is truly, absolutely stunning and very much deserves the attention and recognition it is getting.
