Malaysians with disabilities are just as eager to work and earn a living for themselves despite having to endure more challenges than able-bodied people.
Which is why it is amazing to see how Uncle Kentang is helping this former Paralympian.
The philanthropist took to his Facebook page to showcase how former Paralympian, Mogan, is now making a living for himself by filling fire extinguishers, though sadly, the motorbike he was using to deliver the fire extinguishers has broken down beyond repair.
He wrote, “A disabled Indian friend, Mogan in Taiping, Perak. He wants to be self-reliant and support himself with his own abilities. He wants a modified quad-bike to allow him to keep working and to deliver fire extinguishers to his customers.”
Mogan, a divorcee with no children, had both his legs amputated due to an illness. At the age of 48, he had become a Paralympian.
While he originally lived with his sister, she had passed away.
“He makes a living selling fire extinguishers and has been working hard to support himself. Before this, he was using a second-hand motorcycle from a donor to deliver the fire extinguishers. Now, the motorcycle is old and damaged, and it has been repaired many times. But it often dies, so it has been put aside,” Uncle Kentang explained.
Since the motorcycle no longer functions, the former Paralympian has to call a taxi every time he needs to deliver a fire extinguisher.
“He wants to buy a modified quad-bike, which is convenient for him to make deliveries and it is safer on the road.”
Mogan told Uncle Kentang that when his business is good, he can get a monthly income of RM800 to RM1,000. Along with the assistance he receives from the Social Welfare Department of RM450 a month, it is all just enough to cover his rent, bills and living expenses.
“For a disabled friend who is so diligent and actively working hard in life, are you willing to help him?”
“We will look for a motorcycle shop as soon as possible and buy a used motorcycle for retrofitting,” he added.
We’re so happy to know that Uncle Kentang will be helping Mogan get the motorcycle he needs so that he can continue to make a living for himself.
Taiping folks, do consider looking out for Mogan when purchasing or refilling your fire extinguishers!
