When we talk about Ipoh, the first thing we may think of are either the tauge chicken or the tau fu fah.
A new themed-cafe that sells tau fu fah in town is putting a twist to the way our favourite delicacy is being sold with the theme of the famous Japanese street racing manga series, Initial-D!
The name of the shop is Fujiwara Tofa and there is even a real and functioning AE86 (hachiroku) at the storefront! There are also other cars such as an EVO parked outside. As we aren’t able to cross states, we called up the boss of this establishment for a little chat.
Mr. Loo, affectionately known as Ah Mun is a 46-year-old businessman who runs the cafe with his wife and a few of his friends. This business had its soft launch in October 2020 but due to the MCO, they were unable to have a grand opening.
When asked about the inspiration behind the cafe, Mr. Loo told us that he fell in love with the AE86 after watching Initial-D. As an avid car collector, he went through a few people before he was able to get his hands on one. After buying the car, he felt like he needed to do something with it and that was when he got the idea to establish an AE86 cafe!
“I’ve loved cars ever since I was young!”
When asked about whether he could drift, Mr. Loo has said that he does, however, he does not drift with the AE86 as he does not want to damage it.
“It’s hard to look for its spare parts in Malaysia, so I would use older cars when I want to drift.”
Despite it being a theme cafe, it does not mean that they cut back on the quality of their food! The tau fu fah and soybean milk are made freshly every day by Mr. Loo’s wife and his partner’s wife.
“We try our best to ensure quality in everything we do.”
If you’re feeling the FOMO from not being in Ipoh to check this out for yourself in real life, don’t worry! The boss has also mentioned that they will open up other branches of this AE86 cafe in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. The working hours of the cafe in Ipoh are from 12pm to 11pm daily and they are pork-free. The address is as follows:
PALO 101, 187, Ipoh Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Taman Jubilee 30000 Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.
For more information, you can contact them on Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram.
