Kuala Lumpur has many skyscrapers that stand tall and proud to form our iconic skyline and it looks like there are more set to pop up in the next few years! A report by The Edge Prop suggests that there may be a new 700-metre building which will be built within Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

However, it is expected to come up only after 2030, and is tentatively named Tower M at the moment. This tower is expected to be the tallest building in Malaysia, soaring above the soon-to-be completed Exchange 106, which is 492 metres tall, while the PNB118, which is still developing, will be 635 metres tall. In comparison, the 88-storey tall Petronas Twin Towers only stands at 375 metres.

This new skyscraper will reportedly be built by KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd (KLCCH), the owner of Petronas Twin Towers. The building will be made up of three office towers standing on top of a retail podium across four acres of land. It is expected to be constructed next to the mass rapid transit (MRT) KLCC East Station near Jalan Binjai in Kuala Lumpur.

Tower M is rumoured to have 145 floors while a spokesman for KLCCH said that the foundation work for the towers have already begun, around the same time of the construction of the station. Work is currently being done for four basement levels of parking bays, one concourse retail level, four retail podium levels and the foundations of the future office towers.

Although the foundation is already being laid, construction on the actual buildings will only begin in the distant future, probably beyond 2030. KLCCH says that they will hold off building the towers until they have secured leases for the whole building as they are not a “speculative developer”.

It was reported that it is expected to take about 15 to 16 years to fill up the existing and incoming space based on current absorption levels of 1 million to 1.5 million sq ft per year. Tower M will be the first super skyscraper linked to the government under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s second stint as prime minister.

What do you think about these reported upcoming towers?
