The struggles of the pandemic season has caused many iconic eateries to close their doors. But ever so rarely, a second chance presents itself.

Some months ago, the famous Air Itam Laksa hawker stall was forced to cease operations due to financial difficulties caused by the Covid-19 lockdowns and harassment from debt collectors.

Now, they’re reopening, much to the joy of Penangites and Malaysians in general. Air Itam state assemblyman, Joseph Ng Soon Siang, shared the good news as he helped the hawker stall owner prepare for their reopening.

He wrote,

“The famous Air Itam’s Laksa will be available again starting tomorrow (4 December). Don’t forget to JIO (invite) your friends to try this legendary (dish).”

Though, the good news does come with a twist. The laksa stall operator will only be serving on weekends.

“The owner finally agreed to only operate the laksa stall on weekends, beginning the first week of December, after we met him for discussions.”

“Yes, Air Itam’s laksa is back again beginning tomorrow (4 December) as it is a trademark not only for Air Itam, but also for Penang tourism”, he added.

Either way, we’re ridiculously happy to see this historical stall reopen and live on as an icon of local street food.

How happy are you that the Air Itam Laksa stall is reopening? Let us know in the comment section.
