Malaysia is a land filled with many races and culture and it could be described as a melting pot where everyone is very patient and tolerant with each other.
Unfortunately for this Sudanese student, he was subjected to racial discrimination in a bus. In a video that’s circulating on Reddit, it seems that he was yelled at for “not wearing a mask”.
In the lengthy 5-minute video, it could be seen that an uncle who was on the bus kept saying,
“Do you know who I am? I can get you into big trouble!”
The uncle then proceeded to berate him, asking him to show his passport and calling him a n*gro. Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, the student named Ayman mentioned that this incident happened just over the weekend.
“I was on my way to One Utama from Damansara Uptown and I got onto a nearly empty bus. I forgotten to put on my mask when I was in the bus and as soon as the uncle came on the bus, he started shouting at me”, he said.
Ayman mentioned that he didn’t want trouble and told the uncle to calm down. He politely told the uncle to please be seated as the bus is about to move and assured that he will wear his mask.
Unfortunately, this aggravated the uncle even more and he shouted at him, demanding him to put his mask on immediately.
“He continued yelling profanities at me, calling me a n*gro and asking me to go back to Africa. He proceeded to ask for my name and when I didn’t respond, he said that I was ashamed of my name and my country”, he added.
After nearly 4 minutes of tolerating the man, Ayman finally spoke up and told the uncle to stop but the uncle kept insisting that Ayman doesn’t know the law and that he has broken the law.
The uncle also shouted at Ayman saying that,
“If you cannot follow the law then don’t be in Malaysia.”
Another uncle who was on the bus then joined in to berate Ayman, saying that,
“It’s like that, these black people are like that, they think they’re some big shot in our country.”
According to Ayman, as he reached his stop, he asked the bus driver if he was causing any trouble. He told the bus driver that he doesn’t want any trouble and that if he (bus driver) has told him to put on a mask the minute he stepped onto the bus he would have done so.
Following the incident, Ayman has mentioned that the bus driver was also not wearing a mask and it’s hard to think that it’s not racially motivated. However, he expressed that he has no ill intentions towards the uncles who berated him and would like to use this incident to raise awareness.
“I came to Malaysia when I was 5, attended primary and secondary school here. So, I definitely don’t think that these people represent Malaysia in any way, some of the best people I know are from a similar background to those men.
I just hope that people are nicer to each other regardless of where we are from. I think the fact that Malaysia is so multi-cultural is something that should be celebrated”, he said.
Ayman also mentioned that he should have been less forgetful and worn his mask prior to boarding the bus. Lastly, he mentioned that despite the shortcomings, he is glad that the matter did not escalate further.

It’s always nice to be kind to other people regardless of where they’re from. We’re sorry you have to go through this Ayman and thank you for speaking up about it.
