A 14-year-old student from Southwest China’s Sichuan Province was left permanently disabled after being given physical punishment in which she had to do 150 squats at her school last June.
As reported by Global Times, the junior high school student, Ren, from Xianshi Vocational Senior High School, was punished by a student leader named Mu. It has been reported that Ren was found violating dormitory administration regulations by bringing in snacks.
A teacher, Liu, supervising the dormitory was also present at the time but did not attempt to stop the incident, which led to permanent injury to Ren’s left foot.
According to Global Times, Ren’s mother, Zhou, said the incident happened around 10 pm on 10 June last year, when Mu and Liu were inspecting Ren’s dormitory to check whether anyone had brought in snacks without permission.
Mu allegedly found a packet of snacks on Ren’s bed and ordered her to do 300 squats as punishment but Ren denied that the snacks belonged to her and said that her foot had been injured back in April that year. She was then forced to do 150 squats under the supervision of Mu and Liu.
Diagnosed with lifetime mobility restriction
After the incident, Ren had medical treatment at several hospitals and even had surgery. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a lifetime mobility restriction. She has since had to walk on crutches.
Not only was she diagnosed with physical injuries but also suffers from depression due to the incident.
According to a teacher at the school, there was no dispute between Ren and Mu prior to the incident.
It has also been reported that Ren’s parents and the school have yet to settle the dispute over compensation and follow-up treatments after one year’s negotiation, although the school has covered Ren’s medical treatment fees totalling 109,774 yuan (RM 71,060.12) so far.
The dormitory supervising teacher, Liu, was fired on 14 July.
