It is almost the end of the month of Ramadan and the last stretch is coming into view.
Recently, a fasting Muslim Singaporean shared their story to a Singaporean page named SG Follows All about a bad experience when they were trying to break their fast.
This took place on 12 April when the fasting individual boarded the MRT around 6:30 at Clementi. They needed to go all the way to Bedok which takes more than 50 minutes. As it is the month of Ramadan, they needed to break their fast at 7+, so they did so on the train with just a Snickers bar.
“I had no choice but to break fast during my journey on the MRT as I had no luxury to get down at a station, eat out then get on board back.”
However, as they unwrapped the chocolate bar, a woman told her firmly that eating on the MRT is illegal and pointed at the signs in the coach.
The individual then said that they were fasting and needed to eat but the woman kept saying that it is illegal to eat inside the MRT.
“After a few seconds, I restarted the conversation by questioning, what if someone is low on sugar and they had to eat? She just kept silent and still repeated that I should not eat on MRT.”
After reaching their station, they went to the MRT staff and asked if it was okay for people to eat finger snacks- those that are dry and without aroma, and the staff said that those were totally fine.
They ended their contribution by asking people to be more considerate of others when on public transport.
“What I want to convey is that, please be considerate when someone is consuming candies or food that doesn’t soil the place, on public transport. You might not know how urgent it is for them, especially Muslims who are fasting.”
Well, we definitely see their point in this. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.
