A man in suing a woman in Singapore after he attempted to pursue a romantic relationship with her but was rejected. To further understand this story, let’s start from the beginning.
According to The Straits Times, the man, Mr Kawshigan, had met and befriended the woman, Ms Nora Tan, in 2016. Though, years later in 2020, it became clear that they were heading in different directions.
Mr Kawshigan had considered her his ‘closest friend’ whereas Ms Tan only saw him as a regular friend and asked that they cut down on interacting with each other as she felt that there was a need for stronger boundaries. She also urged him to be “self-reliant”.
Later that year, he threatened her with legal action and issued a letter of demand as he believed she caused “monetary damages arising from negligent infliction of emotional distress and possible defamation“.
Ms Tan attempted to talk Mr Kawshigan out of it via a text message saying that her “discomfort was genuine”. He didn’t take that well and threatened to damage her personal and professional life if she doesn’t try to pursue a romantic relationship with him.
His counsellor also invited her to participate in his session, to which she agreed as she hoped that it would help him understand her choice of not wanting to be with him romantically. This went on for a year and a half before she gave up, realising he had no intention of letting her go.
Following that, Ms Tan filed a harassment suit against Mr Kawshigan and he retaliated by sending her messages riddled with “damage that has strong legal basis” and “make your liability worst”.
After further discussions on how to improve their relationship, Ms Tan ultimately decided to completely cut out Mr Kawshigan from her life as she couldn’t take his insistence and inability to respect her boundaries.
With that, on July 7, 2022, Mr Kawshigan filed a claim for $3 million (RM9,751,983.86) of which he apparently suffered losses in earning capacity and business partnerships due to remarks and negligence on Ms Tan’s part, on top of costs towards counselling sessions he had attended from trauma he suffered.
He also filed another claim for $22,000 (RM71,514.55) that she had allegedly breached an agreement to better align their relationship, all while Ms Tan obtained a protection order against him, and filed a defense and counterclaim to the initial suit.
She also applied to strike out the latter suit which was successful due to Mr Kawshigan’s claims being “manifestly groundless and without foundation”.
The case on the $3 million (RM9,751,983.86) claim is set for a pre-trial hearing at the Singapore High Court on February 9 (Thursday).
