It was recently announced that the US would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the country and higher duties on many other nations, including Malaysia.

Among those affected are a group of glacier-covered islands located near Antarctica, which are only inhabited by penguins.

It would take a 2-week boat ride to get to these islands

Known as Heard Island and McDonald Islands, these islands are among the most remote places on earth, and they make up the external territory of Australia.

According to The Guardian, to get to these islands, one would need to take a two-week boat ride from Perth, Australia. It’s also believed that the last time people set foot on the island was nearly 10 years ago.

According to WWF Australia, these remote volcanic islands are known as a penguin paradise. They’re home to some of the most iconic and ecologically significant penguin species on the planet.

Regardless, both these islands still made it to the list of “countries” that would be hit with the new trade tariffs.

As such, the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, was quoted as saying,

“Nowhere on earth is safe.”

The White House told POLITICO that the Heard and McDonald Islands were listed because they are Australian territories. However, the islands were listed separately from Australia in the White House list and would be hit with a 10% tariff on goods.

Based on a board listing presented by 47th US President Donald Trump, Malaysia will be hit with a 24% reciprocal tariff.

What do you think about the new tariffs set by President Trump?
