The historic signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord took an unexpectedly light-hearted turn when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recounted an unusual moment involving US President Donald Trump’s arrival at KLIA earlier in the day.
Taking the stage after being spontaneously invited by Trump, Anwar opened his remarks by expressing gratitude for the former president’s role in facilitating a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. He praised Trump’s boldness and resolve, noting that such qualities are essential in leaders striving for peace.

“To make peace, sometimes you have to bend the rules,” Anwar said while glancing towards Trump, who was seated nearby.
Anwar then shared that Trump had personally invited him to ride in his presidential limousine, “The Beast”, a gesture that defied standard US security protocols. Despite objections from his security detail, Trump insisted.
“He was thrilled to break the rules,” Anwar said with a smile. “It was a pleasant ride, and I used the opportunity to discuss broader global peace efforts.”

Praised Trump for his commitment to resolving conflicts
Anwar commended Trump’s commitment to resolving conflicts in some of the world’s most volatile regions, calling his efforts “nearly impossible, yet somehow achieved.”
The Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, a landmark agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, marks a turning point in efforts to end months of deadly border clashes. Signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, the accord was witnessed by Anwar and Trump.

Both Anwar, who currently chairs ASEAN, and Trump have played key roles in mediating the conflict. Their diplomatic efforts culminated in a high-stakes meeting hosted by Anwar in Putrajaya on July 28, where Hun Manet met with then-acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. The meeting successfully eased tensions along the disputed border.
The ceasefire, widely hailed as a major achievement for ASEAN, helped prevent further military escalation and safeguarded thousands of civilians living in the conflict zone.
