Three teenagers were hanging out at an abandoned jetty in Sitiawan, Perak, but only two made it home.
Fifteen-year-old Shirley Ngu Syiok Yee accidentally fell into the river and drowned.

The jetty, once used by local fishermen, has seen fewer visitors since it was abandoned. The incident occurred around 7:05 pm last night (May 9) when Shirley stepped on a rotten wooden plank and fell into the river, Sin Chew reported.
Her friends contacted her family for help, but by 9:45 pm, Shirley was still missing. Firefighters and police were then called to the scene, and the search began shortly after authorities arrived around 11:30 pm.
This morning (May 10), Shirley’s body was found floating near the riverbank, about 1 km from where she had fallen.

In a Facebook post by Pantai Remis assemblyman Wong May Ing, she confirmed the news of Shirley’s death. Wong also paid a visit to the scene last night. Shirley’s body was discovered at 7:52 AM today and was pronounced dead by personnel from the Ministry of Health (KKM).
“I heard a splash”
In another Sin Chew report, Shirley’s friends said they heard a splash and noticed that a rotten wooden plank had given way. One of them said Shirley had wanted to take pictures of the sunset.
“I told her to be careful and not to go down. After she fell, I saw her hands on the surface, waving and splashing the water.”
“I immediately called her father to inform him.”

The operation ended at 9:45 am today and Shirley’s remains were handed to the police for further action.
