In July, The Star had uncovered a worrying case that revolved around the head of the Orthopaedics department of a Klang Valley hospital who was sexually harassing the house officers there.
The predator targeted young female housemen whom he assumed couldn’t defend themselves as he could fail them anytime.
One of the victims told The Star that once, the doctor invited her for a meeting and immediately locked the door of his office. She continued,
“He then grabbed me and started to unbutton my shirt and kiss my lips. He said he was going to give me his ‘blessings’. I pushed him away and ran out of the room. I was shocked and depressed, I was disgusted.”
This is just one of many cases that occurred. Other specialists at the hospital did not take action because they were worried about losing their positions.
A few days after the news of his rotten habits broke out, it was reported that he was told to go on leave with more and more victims stepping up to report about his misdemeanour.
Deputy Health director-general Datuk Dr Azman Abu Bakar told The Star that he couldn’t take any action as there were no police reports made at that time.
The health minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad also said that he was setting up an independent body to look into the case. In September, the body had recommended that the predator be suspended from his duties.
After months of thorough investigations, the day came and effective of 14 November, the ‘sexual predator’ was terminated of all his services following allegations of sexual misconduct.
The Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that the Yang diPertuan Agong consented to the termination and the letter was already handed to him.
He explained, as quoted by Malaysiakini,
“Upon the advice of the Prime Minister’s Department, the outcome of the discussions between PSD and the Attorney-General’s Chambers was presented to the Yang diPertuan Agong.”
Kudos to the health ministry for taking action and stopping the predator from inflicting any more damage on future housemen. This will prevent other sexual predators from ever thinking of taking advantage by using the power they have over others.
