Political parties are campaigning hard to gain voters’ favour as candidates are travelling around the country giving speeches and holding events. Last night (May 1) was Labour Day and it looks like the place to be was in Sekinchan. Candidates from both Barisan Nasional (BN) and Democratic Action Party (DAP) arrived at the little town to woo voters.
While DAP was having a mega-ceramah and gave talks with the incumbent assemblyperson Ng Suee Lim and several other heavyweights, BN had a very different idea. They decided that they would throw a “BN candidates roadshow concert” at the tourist town, which offered a heaving free food buffet that had crabs, roast duck, chicken, laksa and made-to-order burgers, according to Malaysiakini.
Other attractions include local singers, two multi-coloured modified cars, and a 3D hologram of Najib, but still, the atmosphere at that time was rather subdued. Not long after that, the event’s organiser and BN Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Mohd Yunos announced that there’d be a lucky draw. This time, it looks like BN spared no expense as they gave out expensive items such as a television, fridge, washing machine and a motorcycle. Wah, so generous leh!
However, perhaps the most anticipated prize of the night was in the form of RM25,000 cash, which was won by an ecstatic man. When he got up on stage to claim his prize, BN candidates asked him,
“Before you take your prize money of RM25,000, do you support BN?”
After he answered in the affirmative, they asked him to remember to vote before leading the crowd in chanting, “BN is great!”, “Sekinchan is great!”, “Sungai Besar is great!’
Jamal had also promised the Sekinchan fisherfolk that they would give them a bonus of RM2,000 each if BN wins the seat. Like this also can meh? Likening this to buying votes, DAP has since lodged a police report against BN, saying that they have committed election offences, The Star reported.
Jamal had previously explained that the money came from “sponsors” who came from local businesses and said that neither he nor BN had funded the event. Apparently, BN had raised RM150,000 in donations from the audience during the event.
Videos of the lucky man going up on stage to claim his prize had gone viral on social media as netizens were circulating it among their friends. Marina Mahathir also shared the video on her Facebook profile, condemning BN’s actions.
