Two people in Indonesia managed to escape death in East Java after their car flew off an unfinished highway while they were following directions from Google Maps.

On April 9 (Wednesday) at around 10PM, Rudie Heru Komandono, along with a female passenger, had the GPS set up on the dashboard of his BMW and was following the route to a friend’s house, according to The Daily Mail.

They drove through a gap in the construction barrier

They drove through the construction barrier even though the app had already mapped the new road in East Java and rerouted them away from the unfinished highway.

The 61-year-old ended up driving right through a gap in the construction barrier and off the edge of a 5-metre embankment before somehow landing safely.

A video shows his car flying off the unfinished flyover and crashing onto the road below.

“It wasn’t my fault”

In the video, the car was seen narrowly missing 2 other cars and a motorcycle that had just passed by, before landing nose-first on the road below and finally coming to a stop on the divider.

Rudie later claimed it wasn’t his fault as he was only following the GPS.

“The road suddenly became dark and there were no other cars. Then I realised there was a problem when the car started falling and crashed on the ground. My friend said she is not getting in the car with me again. But it was not my fault.”

They both miraculously survived with minor injuries

Medics soon showed up to treat Rudie and the passenger, 47-year-old Endang Sri Wahyuni, both of whom survived the crash with just minor injuries.

“I was trying to follow the GPS on my phone, but it got confusing. Now I’m worried about the car insurance. I don’t think it’s going to be fixable,” Rudie said.

Inspector Aswoko, head of the Law Enforcement Unit at the Gresik Police Traffic Unit, explained that there were exits on either side of the elevated expressway that Rudie should’ve taken. Instead, he kept driving straight and ended up on the unfinished bridge at JI Tol Manyar.
