A store in Segamat was fined RM1,000 for using multi-purpose cleaner in replacement of ‘hand sanitiser’ which was not recommended by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
Sin Chew Daily reported that the multi-purpose cleaner in question was purchased online half a year ago and was poured into a plastic spray bottle.
The store was caught when Segamat police did an unscheduled inspection at 6.10pm on 8 December 2020. At the time of the incident, the police also inspected the store’s thermometer for measuring visitors’ body temperature and their QR code as well as their customer record book, and found that they all met the guidelines according to the MOH.
However, when they checked the diluted liquid in the spray bottle, they realised that there wasn’t the ‘cold feeling’ of alcohol, and discovered that it was actually multi-purpose cleaner.
The police issued the store a fine in accordance with Article 11 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020, and ordered them to pay the fine before 21 December.
Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, the store owner said that when he bought the multi-purpose cleaner online about half a year ago, the seller said it met the standards of the MOH and assured them that they could use it. He said they did not read the label of the bottle carefully and always thought it was hand sanitiser.
He added that they chose the gel type of cleaner and diluted it with water to be used in the store, but soon realised that it was not suitable to be used after the inspection. The owner then urges others to ensure that their hand sanitisers meets the standards of the MOH.
