When it comes to travelling, when you go is just as important as where you want to go, right? In Western Australia, even a few weeks’ difference can completely transform your experience!
Unlike destinations with a short window of perfect weather, or “stable” tropical climates like ours, Western Australia offers something truly remarkable all year-round. Covering 2.5 million square kilometres (about 10 times the size of Malaysia), Western Australia boasts diverse climates, from Mediterranean charm in the south to tropical warmth in the north.
There is no “wrong” season in Western Australia, BUT we do recommend that you find out which season suits your travel style better.
Here is your season-by-season guide to experiencing Western Australia at its finest, specifically for Malaysian travellers wondering when to take a break Down Under!
Winter (June – August) ❄️
The North West of Western Australia experiences their seasons differently. Rather than traditional winter and summer seasons, they have the Wet and the Dry seasons. Thus, this Dry season offers a tale of two “winters”: one down south with hearty food and misty forests, and the other up north, with sunny days and starry nights.

The National Anzac Centre
‘Tis the season for long lunches by a crackling fire, with braised meats in the Margaret River region. If you’re up for it, go for a hike to Quinninup Falls and check out IG-worthy lookouts, or the Wooditjup National Park, which boasts a really stunning section of forest and greenery. If you prefer indoor experiences, you can opt for museum-hopping in Albany’s Historic Whaling Station with its dramatic Southern Ocean views, or The National Anzac Centre, perched above King George Sound with immersive presentations of World War I stories.
- Cooler Northern Summer

Broome Camel Safaris
With the scorching summer heat gone, it’s time to explore Broome’s Cable Beach, a stretch of 22 kilometres of pristine white sand along turquoise water. For a more atypical cool-weather activity, Broome Camel Safaris lets you ride a camel by the beach during sunset! Further inland, visitors can chase waterfalls in the Kimberley and marvel at ancient gorges carved into million-year-old rocks and other mesmerising sights.
Spring (September – November) 🌷
This is when the state explodes into colour, with the soothing warm days and cooler evenings that feel custom-made for exploration.
- Wildflowers Awaken

Araluen Tulip Festival
Western Australia is home to over 12,000 species of wildflowers (the largest collection on Earth!). Up north, Dalwallinu serves the Wildflower Way, where you’ll find vibrant displays, including the captivating wreath flowers you won’t find anywhere else. Plus, Araluen Botanic Park in Perth Hills turns into a haven for tulips each spring, with the special Araluen Tulip Festival celebrating these flowers for 6-8 weeks beginning in September. Over 150,000 blooms fill the terraced gardens, creating a living paint palette that shifts and changes as you walk through.

Wave Rock
It’s exploration season thanks to the mild weather. The Golden Outback region offers countless scenic drives through historic towns and natural wonders. Railway enthusiasts can opt for the Minnivale Rail and Heritage Centre, which displays unique carriages and memorabilia, including a hand-pumped Kalamazoo cart. For natural wonder appreciators, you can make your way to Hyden, where the Wave Rock (also known as Katter Kich), a 110-metre-long granite formation that looks like a frozen ocean wave, awaits.
Summer (December – February) ☀️
Perfect for beach days, outdoor dining, and the kind of heat that lets you feel close to home.

Rottnest Island
90 minutes away from Perth is Rottnest Island (also known as Wadjemup), a predominantly car-free environment where 63 beaches await to be discovered by eager explorers. Rent a bike to ride along the coast and collect quokka selfies along the way for the penultimate Rottnest experience. Or if you prefer more adrenaline, get your surf’s up in the Margaret River region. Even if you don’t want to surf yourself, watching surfers tackle the wave breaks is still one heck of a spectator sport!

Elizabeth Quay
The city comes alive in the summer with outdoor concerts, street festivals, and bustling markets that spill onto pavements and parks. If crowds aren’t your thing, Kings Park and Botanic Garden (Kaarta Koomba) offers a quieter vibe with skyline views over the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), sprawling lawns perfect for picnics, and walking trails through greenery that exist right in the middle of the city.
Autumn (March – May) 🍂
Experience Western Australia’s yearly golden hour — perfect for photographers and slow travellers alike. If summer is the livelier season, autumn is for the thoughtful conversations afterwards.

S&R Orchard
Autumn is harvest season, making it the perfect time to pick crisp apples, sweet pears, late-season strawberries, and the like in S&R Orchard in Walliston, the grapevines in Swan Valley, and other orchards in the land. With these experiences, you’ll discover something deeply satisfying about plucking your own lunch.

Golden Valley Tree Park
The March to May period is the ideal time to explore Perth’s warmest colours. Whistlepipe Gully in Mundy Regional Park offers a 3.6km loop through wildflower-studded bushland. You can also consider driving south to the Blackwood River Valley, which turns into an open-air gallery draped in gold and amber as seen in towns like Bridgetown, Nannup, and Balingup.
