Instead of earning an honest living, some scammers just don’t know when to back out. In fact, many of them are constantly “refining” their modus operandi (MO) and continue preying on the gullible.
From phone calls to text messages, scammers today can rob away your money with a simple click on a link, saving them the hassle to give you a call or text you. This time, we’re sharing with you 1 of the latest MO by scammers who steal your money by sending you a “wedding invitation”.
In a Facebook post shared by Dr. Ali Razak, an unknown number, under the disguise of a business account will reach out to its victims and the sender goes straight to the point.
“You’re cordially invited to the wedding of our daughter. Click on the link below to install the apk to get the digital wedding invitation.”
To those who are not aware, apk stands for Android Application Package.
In this case, we can’t deny our concerns about the senior citizens as not all of them are tech-savvy, and many of them are likely to find out more information by doing exactly what the scammers want them to do – click on the link. We can only imagine the consequences. Will the money in the account be partially (or entirely) gone? An effect on their retirement funds? A breach of private information?
The possibilities are endless and terrifying.
Based on the screenshot shared by Dr. Ali, the recipient of the link responded by asking who was on the other end. The sender, however, did not reveal his identity. He tried to convince the recipient to click on the link.
“Please click on the link to install the apk for the digital wedding card, so you’ll know who we are.”
It’s like the killer is leaving the door open for his victim and luring the latter into the dark room.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Dr. Ali said that the incident did not happen to him but he was merely sharing someone else’s experience.
“He clicked on the link, and his money in the bank was gone. He wanted to see if it was 1 of his old friends who wasn’t in his contacts.”
The amount of lost money was not disclosed but Dr. Ali told WORLD OF BUZZ that he wanted to share the incident as a step of precaution and awareness to the public.
We hope the police and the relevant organisations will find the solution to end these scams once and for all before they wreak more havoc on people’s lives.
