In a nation that boasts a truly diverse range of cultures, it is always a good thing to learn from one another as Malaysians and encourage tolerance as well as harmony. From traditional clothing to decor and food, there’s no harm to expanding your horizons about what our country has to offer with its rich cultural lineage. For one Malay couple, this was something they took to heart when they decided to organise their own wedding reception, and the results have been nothing short of incredible!
Taken by wedding photographer Vencent Thiam, an engaged Malay couple from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah decided to take a different approach during their wedding reception, one that many people probably wouldn’t have expected them to settle on. The couple, Ag Mohd Syafiq and his bride, May Phang, decided to be wedded in traditional Chinese garb!
While they did have three different sets of outfits ready for their wedding, from the traditional Malay ensemble to more Western wedding gowns, it was the incredible flash of radiant red silk of the couple’s Chinese wedding attire that has captured both the eyes and hearts of Malaysians all over.
Their decision was even backed by the support of their own family, with Syafiq saying:
“My wife’s father is a Chinese Muslim, her mother is from a mixed ethnicity of Chinese and Bajao, while I am Bruneian, so it is a very multicultural combination.”
Photos of their wedding taken by Vencent have since gone absolutely viral over social media, attracting the attention of Malaysians all across. In fact, the original post has over 6,000 shares and counting!
This only comes to show that with tolerance and a willingness to learn and discover other cultures, one can stand to truly gain not only a wealth of knowledge, but also experiences to last a lifetime! We wish the couple all the best, and salute them for being true representatives of what Malaysia truly is!
