As if 2020 could not get any more worse than it already is, we now may have an environmental disaster to confront, alongside ongoing protests in Hong Kong and America, as well as the Covid-19 global pandemic.

Just yesterday, it has been revealed that President Vladmir Putin has declared a state of emergency after a massive oil spill was found in a river located in the Arctic Circle from a power plant.

The accident itself, which happened last Friday (29th May 2020), has left over 20,000 tonnes of diesel fuel to contaminate waters in the river, which is found near the city of Norisik, Siberia.

Images of the spill show that surrounding areas of the river have been completely stained in a deep, blood red as a result of the diesel fuel intermingling with Arctic waters. The Russian government was only made aware of the situation after photos and video footage from the resulting oil spill emerged over social media, according to CNBC.

The plant from which the oil spill originated from is operated by Nornickle, the world’s largest producer of palladium and one of the largest producers of nickel, platinum and copper.

It is unclear at this time as to what sort of long-lasting environmental impact this massive spill would have on the surrounding area.
