A good plate of Roti Canai with thick dhaal gravy and curry sounds like a perfect way to kickstart your morning. It’s not meant only for breakfast, but any time you crave it, you can get it. As Malaysians, we can’t deny the fact that it’s one of the best foods out there.
It appears that Taste Atlas thinks so, too.
The organisation has officially ranked Roti Canai as the second-best FOOD in the world. Brazilian steak, Picanha, was crowned champion in the 100 Best Dishes in the World, and it is said to be the “Rolls Royce” cut of meats. Picanha was made popular in Brazil before it was adopted in Portugal.
The food that comes in third, right after Roti Canai, is a popular Thai dish that may be familiar to many of us – the Phat Kaphrao. To those who are unaware, it means “holy basil stir fry”, so basil is the key ingredient in this dish and can be cooked with any protein. It is usually paired with white rice. The food is available at many places in Malaysia.
Taste Atlas described Roti Canai as traditional flatbread, which was originally introduced to Malaysians by Indian labour immigrants.
However, that’s not all. Malaysia, once again, appeared in another list for a different category, as our country is ranked 31st in the 100 Best Cuisines in the World! Bulgarian and German cuisines came before and after Malaysian cuisine, according to the list.
For the love of Roti Canai! Now that we’re talking about it, we can’t help but have a sudden craving for the food!
Fellow Malaysians, how do you have your Roti Canai? With dhaal, curry, sugar, or banjir?
