A 49-year-old man has been arrested and RM83,000 worth of firecrackers were confiscated by the Region 2 Marine Police Force (PPM) during a raid last Wednesday (13 April 2022) in Batu Pahat, Johor. Part of ‘Op Kontraban’, PPM Region 2 commander, ACP Muhd Zailani Abdullah asserted that the banned items are believed to be for the local market for the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration.
As reported by national news agency Bernama, PPM Region 2 arrested the 49-year-old man who is believed to have been storing the illegal firecrackers. The team rushed to the location following a tip-off from the public and found a total of 63 boxes containing various types of firecrackers and fireworks worth around RM83,000.
Muhd Zailani in a statement yesterday commented,
“The case is being investigated under the Explosives Act 1957 and if convicted, the perpetrator can be sentenced to up to seven years in prison or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both,”
The PPM Region 2 commander also urged the public to channel information to the authorities to combat any form of crime, especially involving the safety and public order of the maritime community. Furthermore, any information can be channeled to PPM Region 2 at 07-2372221 or 07-2372222.
