Yet another Malaysian movie is receiving flak online for various aspects involving religious sensitivities.
Local film, Mentega Terbang, tells the story of Aisyah, a Muslim schoolgirl who is fascinated with what happens after death in different religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism as well as through the Al Quran, Bible and Torah.
“She is driven by a question, ‘What happens to people after they die?’. With a mother who is sick, and an ever-present father who is caring as he is devoted, will Aisyah be able to find the answer to what she seeks?” the Mentega Terbang Facebook page summarised.
Despite the rather interesting storyline, Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia – PUTRA has since made a police report against the movie with the Dang Wangi Police Station and has called for it to be banned. This is due to certain scenes allegedly challenging the teachings of Islam.
“This film can distort and challenge the faith of Muslims and is quite dangerous for those who have not fully understood the teachings of Islam. This film is clearly a provocation against Islam, the Federal Religion, and puts Islam on par with other religions.”
“This is very dangerous to the security of the country because this provocation will cause the anger of Muslims because matters related to Islamic beliefs are very sensitive matters. The freedom of speech and publishing any news or films have a limit that cannot provoke the anger of the majority of Malaysians who are Muslim”, they wrote in a statement.
While the movie revolves around the schoolgirl researching what happens to people after they die in different religions, it also depicts a scene where she shares her interest in trying pork.
Another scene in question is the main character’s father telling her that he would be okay with her converting out of Islam should she find another religion that speaks to her on a personal level.
PUTRA has since called for the movie to be banned
“PUTRA urged the police to immediately investigate and refer the investigation of this film to the Islamic Religious Council of Wilayah Persekutuan (WP) and the states, as well as JAKIM to get confirmation that this film is contrary to the teachings of Islam.”
“The next action is to immediately advise KDN (Ministry of Home Affairs) to immediately ban the screening of this film after receiving advice from JAKIM or the Islamic Religious Council,” they added.
