Often, sexual harassment and assault victims choose not to speak up due to fear of pushback, victim blaming and more.
An incident involving a sexual harassment victim who WAS a bank employee is now going viral online.
NGO, the National Union of Bank Employees Malaysia (NUBE), has been taking to their Facebook page to highlight this incident, which involves a bank employee being fired from the bank she worked at after she had reported her superior for alleged sexual harassment.
In their most recent post, they wrote, “Why is (bank) punishing the victim of sexual harassment? Instead of supporting the employee who reported serious sexual harassment, (the bank) suspended, docked her pay and then fired her. After enduring months of trauma and lack of protection, she now faces the ultimate betrayal by her own employer.”
“What reason did (the bank) give for firing her? ‘Insubordination’ – for refusing yet another ‘interview’ after already filing her complaints. This isn’t insubordination; it’s a targeted punishment for daring to speak up!”
With this, NUBE demands that the bank correct its actions.
“Why does (the bank) attack the victim instead of protecting her? A bank that claims ‘zero tolerance’ for harassment has shown zero tolerance for a victim trying to seek justice. (The bank) is making an example out of her, showing all employees that reporting abuse is a risk to your livelihood,”
“We demand (the bank) to reverse this cruel decision, reinstate the victim and start acting like the institution it claims to be,” they added.
In another post, they also shared that the accused in this incident has even apparently been formally charged in court for his alleged sexual harassment.
“Despite the court formally charging (the accused) with sexual harassment, (the bank) has dismissed the victim on unjust and ridiculous grounds,” NUBE explained.
