Everything goes up (including prices of goods), but nothing comes down, except for rainwater.
In a report by Sin Chew, kopitiams in Malaysia are expected to increase their prices of coffee beverages, thanks to the rise in the prices of coffee beans globally.
The President of the Malaysia-Singapore Coffee & Tea Association, Wong, said that Kopitiams in Malaysia are likely to increase their coffee prices to as much as 20 sen in July 2024.
However, Wong believes that an increase of 20 sen is still reasonable.
“It’s still a fair price, or else it would be tough for the kopitiams to survive.”
As Wong pointed out, the 20 sen increase is just a possible amount, and different kopitiams in different areas might start with different prices, depending on the cost of each store.
“Even if the coffee prices increases, it’s still somewhere between RM2 and RM3, so it’s reasonable,” Wong added.
Wong also said that the association has not participated in any meetings about price increases or reductions because every decision is left for the owner of the store owners to make.
Well, why not use local coffee beans to cut costs?
According to Wong, local coffee beans have not been able to capture the hearts and taste buds of many local customers, so imported ones are preferred.
However, the stock for imported coffee beans is limited or out of stock.
“With the depreciation of Ringgit Malaysia, the price of imported coffee beans also increased. It’s more than RM10 per KG.”
Wong also stressed that the Kopitiams, including cafes, must increase their prices, or survival will be tough.
“As for the coffees in cafes, it will be even more expensive.”
