The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) recently announced that UMNO Youth Chief Akmal Saleh will be charged over statements he posted on Facebook, which were said to have disturbed public order.

The AGC said that they’ve reviewed the investigation papers submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) regarding Akmal’s post, but did not disclose which part of the content is under investigation.

Dr Akmal is set to be charged this Friday

Based on the evidence and statements collected, the ACG has decided to charge Akmal under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements that could cause public unrest.

“The individual’s statements were found to potentially threaten public order or involve misuse of network facilities or services,” the statement said.

Akmal later addressed the matter on Facebook, saying he’s fully aware of the charges and will be facing them at 8 AM this Friday (August 22).

“On August 15, I was called to Bukit Aman District Police Headquarters to give my statement after the flag solidarity gathering in Penang. I was then told by the police that I would be charged at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court.”

“We’ll fight it out in court”

Akmal said that because of this, he has to cut his trip to Mecca for Umrah short right after arriving, to face the charges against him.

“I ask for the prayers of all Malaysians for Allah to ease this matter. If this is the price I have to pay to defend the country’s sovereignty, then I won’t back down or admit defeat.”

Earlier, Akmal had harshly criticised a hardware store owner who went viral for hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down outside his shop.

On August 14, he led a protest in front of the shop despite PDRM’s warning against gatherings. He said the protest went smoothly, although there was a minor “provocation” when a Malaysian lawyers’ group showed up with placards, reminding UMNO Youth not to “act like Zionists.”

Despite the tension, PDRM and FRU officers stepped in and managed to calm the situation.
