The heat and the debate are on as the Sarawak state election is nearing and is expected to take place on 18 December (Saturday).
As the election date is only a week before Christmas, some places have also started to put up some decorations to get in line with the festive vibes. However, there is one particular decoration that does not sit well with some of the critics there.
Somewhere in Batu Kawah, Sarawak, a Christmas tree with DAP’s rocket logo stands still atop of it.
Dr Kelvin Yii, who is also the MP for Bandar Kuching had taken to his Facebook account to assure that the Christmas tree merely symbolises the celebration of harmony, tolerance and respect that every Malaysian, especially in Sarawak have for one another.
He stated that his political opponents do not share the same enthusiasms as multiple complaints have been lodged to the authorities on the Christmas tree.
“They have asked for the tree to be taken down as it may confuse the Christians there.”
Not only that but the attempts to sabotage the decorations were also done as the wires to the lights were cut off. What’s even surprising is that one of the presents under the Christmas tree was also stolen!
Despite all these challenges, it has not deterred Dr Kelvin’s will and commitment to keep the tree where it belongs for the time being as he wants the symbol of togetherness to continue sparkling during this festive season.
Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) also said that religious sensitivities only take place in Peninsular Malaysia and confusion caused by symbols or logos will not happen in Sarawak.
He ended his post by saying that despite being a Christian himself, the Christmas tree has not confused him and he hoped that no one else will try to sabotage the decoration.
