Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the public to reduce sugar consumption, noting that Malaysia is among the countries with the highest diabetes rates in Asia.
He said unhealthy eating habits, particularly high sugar intake, are among the main contributors to the rising public health problems, which in turn place pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

Datuk seri anwar ibrahim
“Sugar consumption in Malaysia is among the highest in Asia. The government spends a huge amount on medical care, but healthy eating practices must be strengthened so that the people are not exposed to various diseases.”
Called for increase of awareness campaigns
Anwar said awareness campaigns on reducing sugar intake should be intensified, including by providing healthier food and beverage options at hospitals and government premises.

He also proposed that sugary drinks be reduced in all hospitals and that official government refreshments be served with minimal sugar as a way to educate the public.
In addition, he said hospitals and clinics should play a more active role by displaying posters and clear health messages to raise public awareness about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption.
