The MRT Putrajaya line will be opened today (March 16) at 3pm, after many delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Putrajaya line stretches from Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya Sentral, and it has 36 stations in total. Just this morning, Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the opening of the Putrajaya line, and he had a surprise for the public.
Anwar announced FREE rides for the Putrajaya line until March 31, effective today. Feeder buses to the MRT will also be free of charge at the time being.
Ministry of Transport Anthony Loke was also present this morning. Both PM10 and Anthony gave the new train a try. Anwar had nothing but only good words to say about the soon-to-be-opened MRT Putrajaya line.
“It’s very well taken care of in all aspects. The cleanliness, comfort and convenience.”
Anwar also expressed his desire to see the public experience the train ride on the Putrajaya line. He encouraged the public to board the train and give it a try during the FOC duration.
“I’m inviting the public to give it a try. Hopefully, people can make public transport a priority”, he said.
During the opening ceremony, Anwar said that public transportation will be given the utmost priority in the next annual federal budget as many people are affected in terms of productivity due to the never-ending traffic. He clarified that Budget 2023 focused more on health and education.
“Next year will be for transport because people lose productivity, thanks to traffic congestion.”
Here’s what you can expect from the MRT Putrajaya line
According to the official website of MRT, 9 out of the 36 stations in the Putrajaya line will be underground. There will be 10 interchange stations and connecting stations, which will ease commuters to transfer from the Putrajaya Line to existing and future rail lines.
16 of the stations will have the Park N’ Ride facilities where commuters can park their cars at the provided space.
It is also expected to serve about 104,000 commuters per day, with a frequency of 4 minutes during peak hours, and 6 minutes during non-peak hours.
