The Former President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested today (March 11) after an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant was issued.

According to a report by CNN, the Philippines Presidential Communications Office confirmed that the authorities there received the ICC warrant for Duterte’s arrest.

“Earlier this morning, INTERPOL Manila received the official copy of the arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC),” they shared.

This is due to alleged crimes against humanity he committed during his time as the President, where he led a vicious anti-drug crackdown that apparently caused the deaths of over 6,000 people. However, independent monitors believe that this number is much higher.

Duterte’s arrest took place just after he had returned to Manila, Philippines, from Hong Kong, where he had delivered a speech at a campaign rally.

“Upon his arrival, the Prosecutor General filed an ICC notification for an arrest warrant against the former President for crimes against humanity,” the Philippines Presidential Communications Office added.
