A woman received the shock of her life upon discovering pictures of her late cousin being used on social media to garner sympathy and collect donations from the general public.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, 40-year-old Lynn Tan shared that her late cousin suffered from cancer and passed away in December 2024. However, there are those using the late cousin’s photos to deceive the public and collect funds of RM80,000 for ‘cancer treatments’.

“The Facebook page claimed that the victim needed treatment involving a cost of RM80,000 and asked for sympathy from the public when the woman in the picture had passed away,”

“I tried to disguise myself and contact the party involved, and asked how much money is still needed. They said it was about RM30,000, I believe that, so far, they have managed to collect about RM50,000 as a result of this scam,” she said.

A police report will be made soon

Family members of the deceased woman feel saddened that her pictures are being misused by certain parties, and consider this a serious offence.

“Our family is very sorry that the pictures are being misused for fraudulent purposes. The purpose of this disclosure is to prevent more people from being deceived and thus, becoming victims of fraud,”

“We also remind the public to be vigilant and not to easily believe in dubious fundraising actions on social media, in addition to referring to the appropriate parties to identify the authenticity first,” Lynn added.

They are currently collecting information and evidence before filing a police report regarding this matter.
