PDRM Officer in Critical Condition After Shooting Himself with Own Gun at Penang Police HQ

A 58-year-old police officer from the Penang Police Contingent was badly injured after reportedly shooting himself at the Penang Police HQ (IPK) yesterday (April 8).

Penang Police Chief, Datuk Hamzah Ahmad, explained that the said officer was assigned to the Commanding Officer’s Branch at the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters.

He accidentally shot himself in the head

In a statement, Hamzah said the officer suffered serious head injuries after accidentally shooting himself with a pistol.

An investigation at the scene confirmed that a shot had been fired from the weapon the officer was using.

He added that the incident happened at 6:12 PM, and the officer was found with head injuries in the Guard Room at the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters.

Hamzah added that as of the release of the media statement, the officer is still receiving treatment in the Red Zone at the Emergency and Trauma Department of Penang Hospital.

“The public is urged not to speculate”

Meanwhile, Berita Harian reported that Deputy District Police Chief of Timur Laut, Superintendent Lee Swee Sake, said the police officer is still unconscious.

As for the claims that the victim was struggling with depression and debt issues, Swee Sake mentioned that the investigation is still ongoing.

“In light of this, the public is advised not to speculate on the case as it may interfere with the police investigation,” Hamzah said.

 

The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960.
