The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) arrested a policeman and his friend after they were caught smuggling various types of firecrackers and fireworks in Machang, Kelantan on Tuesday (4 April 2023).
Worse, the policeman and his friend even used an official police vehicle to smuggle the RM25,000 worth of fireworks. Both suspects, aged 32 and 35 were arrested at 7.45am on Tuesday.
In a statement, Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun asserted,
“The police team stopped a PDRM Toyota Hilux at the Wakaf Bata, Machang traffic light. Checks found 15 chocolate boxes and 12 gunny sacks containing various types of firecrackers and fireworks.”
The policeman is attached to the Setiu district police headquarters while his partner in crime is a mechanic with 5 previous criminal records related to drugs.
Moreover, in a follow-up statement today, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Acryl Sani refuted the report made by Harian Metro titled “Polis jadi dalang seludup mercun” or roughly translated to English as “Police behind fireworks smuggling”.
In the statement, Acryl stressed that action has been taken against both suspects and that they’re currently being remanded for four days until 8 April 2023. The IGP stressed,
“PDRM won’t compromise with any police officers involved in criminal activities and will take stern action should there be proof.”
