A Palestinian man, who works as a cook at a Singapore soup kitchen in Gaza, has named his newborn baby girl “Singapore” to express his gratitude for the aid Singaporeans provided for his family.
Taking to his Instagram account, Singaporean activist Gilbert Goh, founder of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Love Aid Singapore, shared a video of the father being interviewed by a fellow Love Aid Singapore employee while holding his newborn and showing the latter’s birth certificate.

In the video, the father, Hamdan Hadad, said that he has been working with the NGO for 2 years.
Furthermore, Hamdan revealed that during her pregnancy, his wife had relied on the soup kitchen for nourishment and added that regular meals by Love Aid Singapore had helped her survive the famine amid the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

Singapore was born on 16 October and has her name transliterated in Arabic in her birth certificate, as showcased in the Instagram post.
Weighing 2.7kg at birth, she is the first Palestinian to be named “Singapore”, the post claimed.

In the caption, Goh wished the newborn child good health and hoped that a bright new world would welcome her soon with the prospect of a permanent ceasefire.
Goh also thanked fellow Singaporeans who had helped with Love Aid Singapore’s cause, saying,
“Thank you, Singaporeans, for standing on the right side of humanity with me all this while.”
